Our 2014 Project: Sentara Senior Hospice (On-site and in-home care)

Project: I have always wanted a project that directly blesses seniors but never found an opportunity until now! This year we are going to be making lapghans for seniors at Sentara Hospital's Senior Hospice Care. Lapghans will go to both on-site and in-home care patients.

Project dates: May 1 - October 31, 2014

Project dimensions: a rectangular lapghan (a general size is about 36 inches by 45 inches). Give or take a few inches if your pattern is not exactly those dimensions. Follow your pattern.

Organization Website: http://www.sentara.com/services/hospice-services/Pages/default.aspx (it's pretty detailed so feel free to browse around a few times).

Final word: I understand that lapghans take much longer than our usual smaller projects so I'm not setting a goal just yet. Lapghans are not something you can crank out but each piece will be a source of warmth and comfort for patients during their final days. Feel free to also pray to The Lord for the future recipient's comfort and peace as they approach end of life. Let's make 2014 another meaningful and memorable year as we serve God through our hands. Let's get those hooks, needles and sewing machines going SHOL team!

Note from Sandra

Hello all,

Since almost all of our team members are on Facebook, I have chosen that as my preferred means of communication since last summer. However, I am going to update this blog during our 2014 project and see how it goes. This may be the best means of communication to reach non-members and members who are not on Facebook. I hope you are ready for an amazing 2014 season!

Our 2013 Project is for...

The Union Mission in Norfolk, VA. http://www.unionmissionministries.org/ Our official kickoff will be April 1. When I called them to see if they had a need for a certain amount of winter sets, she said that it was way more than we could fulfill so just give as much as we can. As a result, the SHOL team has no set number goal of sets for this project. Let's just get started and do our best. As usual, I will request a monthly tally of completed sets to keep each other encouraged. Let's pick up our hooks and needles with gusto and worship our Lord with our hands. Have an amazing Easter ladies!

Dust off those hooks and needles - 2013 Project Coming Soon

Easter is this month and I'm currently narrowing down this year's project. There are so many people in need in Hampton Roads and this year there seems to be a greater numbers of people facing homelessness. At the same time, my heart longs to create items (wheelchair/ walker totes, wheelchair shoulder wraps, etc.) for seniors in low-income nursing homes. So many needs I feel our hooks, needles and two hands can fulfill. Prayerfully considering all our options for our 2013 project. We'll be kicking off on April 1 but I will unveil our project a few days earlier. Our 2013 project is coming soon!
